An overview of the week
Seven days, four adults, one trip designed for comfort. The structure has been locked after multiple rounds: airport hotel night one, pick up the Kia Carnival at the airport on Monday morning, drive straight to Apollo Bay for three days on the Great Ocean Road, return to Southbank Wednesday evening, then use the final three days for Phillip Island, Puffing Billy, Queen Vic Market, GoBoat, shopping, and a relaxed farewell dinner on Southbank.

The trip in one sentence
Airport hotel Sunday → drive the Great Ocean Road Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday from an Apollo Bay base → settle into a Southbank apartment Wednesday night → Phillip Island Thursday → Puffing Billy + Queen Vic Market + relaxed Southbank dinner Friday → GoBoat + fly home Saturday.
Why this structure works
Three days on the GOR (not two) with a single Apollo Bay base — no packing and repacking, no rushed driving, room for a leisurely Otways rainforest morning and a proper Twelve Apostles sunset. Puffing Billy deferred to Friday after GOR return — you'll actually enjoy the steam train when you're not still road-weary. Car returned Wednesday night in the CBD — no parking hassle, no unused rental days, Uber to the airport Saturday afternoon. Flower Drum dropped in favour of a relaxed Southbank dinner — the right call after a full Puffing Billy day.

Day-by-day
Seven days, six nights. The GOR is a single-base loop from Apollo Bay across Days 2–4, then everything shifts to Southbank. Tap each day to expand.
Accommodation rhythm
Night 1: Parkroyal Melbourne Airport (skybridge to terminal) · Nights 2–3: Apollo Bay 2-bedroom house · Nights 4–6: Southbank serviced apartment · Return car Wed evening in CBD · Uber to airport Sat afternoon.

Allow 45–60 min for immigration, bags, biosecurity. No car needed tonight — hotel is directly across the skybridge.
18:15
Skybridge walk to Parkroyal
Covered walkway from T2 arrivals to hotel lobby, 2–3 min with luggage trolley. Level 2 access may still be closed for Metro Tunnel works — staff route guests via ground-floor car park lift. Check in, rest, unpack light for Apollo Bay tomorrow.
19:30
Dinner · Airo Restaurant on-site
Not gourmet but perfectly good after a long flight. Seasonal Victorian produce, Indian butter chicken, wood-fired pizza. Skip the AUD 50/adult buffet breakfast tomorrow — faster to grab coffee in the T2 concourse.
21:00
Early night
Big driving day tomorrow. Confirm car rental pickup time (target 09:00) and load Google Maps offline for Apollo Bay region.
07:30
Breakfast & checkout
Quick breakfast in T2 concourse (Axil, Hudsons, from 05:00). Check out Parkroyal by 08:30.
09:00
Collect Kia Carnival · MEL Airport depot
All 8 major brands on ground floor of T123 car park opposite Terminal 2. Target: Europcar or Avis for guaranteed Carnival. Budget AUD 15–20 min for paperwork + inspection. Quick Woolworths run at Highpoint or Essendon DFO on the way out for GOR road snacks, motion-sickness tablets, water.
10:15
Depart airport → Torquay
Via West Gate Bridge + M1 Princes Fwy (toll-free, ~1h 30m). Fill tank in Torquay — last easy petrol for hours.
11:45
Torquay + Bells Beach

12:45
Anglesea Golf Course kangaroos
Wild kangaroos grazing freely on fairways. Walk perimeter or café terrace view. 30 min.

Check in to 2BR Airbnb. Foreshore walk before sunset. Dinner at Apollo Bay Hotel bistro (log fire, easy pub meal) or La Bimba (sustainable seafood, best wine list in town).

177 Great Ocean Rd. No petrol for 60+ km after Apollo Bay. Fill to full even if 3/4.
09:30
Maits Rest Rainforest Walk
15 min drive from Apollo Bay. 800m flat boardwalk loop through 300-year-old beech and myrtle. 45 min visit. Genuinely one of the trip's most atmospheric stops in August morning mist.
10:45
Cape Otway Lightstation
Koalas frequently in eucalyptus along Lighthouse Rd entry. Open 09:00–17:00 daily. Walk the grounds and Visitor Centre — skip the 70-step lighthouse climb for Dad. Scones at Lightkeeper's Café. 90 min visit.
12:45
Drive Otways → Port Campbell
70 km via Lavers Hill (winding, 1h). Top-up fuel at Lavers Hill if needed. Lunch at 12 Rocks Café Port Campbell (ocean view) or Forage for tapas-style. 60 min stop.
14:45
Loch Ard Gorge
Often more dramatic than the Apostles themselves — the 1878 shipwreck story, sea-caves, 6 connected viewpoints along flat clifftop boardwalk. Skip the Gibson Steps beach descent (86 stairs) for Dad's knees. 45 min.
15:45
London Bridge · Arch · Grotto
Three quick stops on the drive back east. Each 5–10 min viewing. Accessible boardwalks.
16:30
Twelve Apostles · golden hour
Sunset 17:41 — arriving 16:30 means 70 min of the best light. Most tour buses gone by 15:30. Fully accessible boardwalk to main viewing platform. 75 min.
17:45
Depart Apostles → Apollo Bay
Drive back via Lavers Hill (1h 15m). Part of the return is in twilight on familiar road — manageable but drive slowly for wildlife. Late dinner at Chris's at Beacon Point (book ahead — Mediterranean fine dining, wood fire, 20 min drive) or simple at Apollo Bay Hotel.
Pick what you missed on Days 2–3
This morning is a sweep — anything you didn't have energy for earlier. Top candidates: Erskine Falls upper lookout (Lorne, 25 min detour), Split Point Lighthouse (Aireys Inlet, flat walk), or Triplet Falls (Otways, 1.6km walk). Only pick ONE — you need to be back in Melbourne CBD by 17:30.
08:30
Breakfast · Apollo Bay café
Hello Coffee Brewing Co or Apollo Bay Bakery. Pack and check out by 10:00.
10:00
Check out · depart Apollo Bay
All luggage in the Carnival. Drive east via coastal GOR.

Drive into hills behind Lorne. Upper platform accessible without the 250-step descent. 45 min total with drive.
12:30
Lunch · Lorne or Aireys Inlet
Grand Pacific Hotel Lorne (beach-view dining) or a la grecque at Aireys Inlet for something a bit special. 75 min.
14:15
Drive Melbourne via inland A1
Torquay → Geelong → M1 → West Gate → Southbank. Faster than retracing coastal route (2h 15m vs 3h). Return to Melbourne ~16:45.
16:45
Drop luggage at Southbank apartment
Quick stop only — do not unload fully. Confirm check-in, offload suitcases.
17:15
Return Kia Carnival · Europcar 89 Franklin St
10 min drive from Southbank via King St. Refuel at Coles Express on Peel St or 7-Eleven Elizabeth St first (within 10 km of depot, standard rule). Europcar closes 17:00 weekdays — target arrival 16:30 max for a proper return. If running late, use after-hours key drop but you remain liable until next morning open.
18:00
Walk or Uber back to Southbank
10 min walk via Elizabeth St and Princes Bridge, or AUD 15 Uber.
19:30
Dinner · Southbank
La Camera Italian at Southgate (2 min walk, Yarra views, Dad-friendly) or Pure South (modern Australian, two-hatted). Early night — Phillip Island tour pickup is 11:45 tomorrow but a full day awaits.
08:30
Leisurely Southbank morning
Coffee at Dukes Coffee Roasters (Flinders Lane, 10 min walk over bridge) or Market Lane. Brunch at Higher Ground (650 Little Bourke St) — iconic Melbourne brunch in converted power station. Budget AUD 25–40/pax.
11:45
Tour pickup · Immigration Museum · 400 Flinders St
12 min walk from Southbank apartment via Princes Bridge. Autopia Tours is the recommended operator — 24-seat coach, upgraded seats, 10-language app, operates since 1987. Winter 11:45 pickup is confirmed by operator.
13:30
Moonlit Sanctuary · Pearcedale (en route)
Hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies. Optional koala encounter (+AUD 35 direct at sanctuary). Eastern barred bandicoot, wedge-tailed eagle, dingo walk available. 90 min visit.
15:30
San Remo · pelican feeding 12:00 daily
If tour passes through earlier — free 15-min show by the bridge. Fish and chips at San Remo Fisherman's Co-op if hungry.
16:00
Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Farm demonstrations: 14:10 cow milking, 14:30 sheep shearing, 14:45 whip cracking, 15:05 working dogs. Accessible paths. Most tour itineraries time this perfectly.
16:45
Penguin Parade Visitor Centre
Heated indoor space. Interactive exhibits, toilets, hot soup at the café. Dad rest window before the cold parade.
17:30
Walk to Underground Viewing bunker
Sheltered boardwalk. Underground tier strongly recommended — heated glass-fronted bunker at penguin eye-level, max 70 people. Wind chill at Summerland Beach in August averages 0–3°C — not a luxury for a 70yo, a medical call.
17:55
Penguin Parade begins
Sunset 17:44, first penguins 17:55–18:10. Hundreds emerge from the ocean and waddle to their burrows. No flash photography allowed — makes it more intimate. Stay for post-parade boardwalk viewing until ~19:15 (penguins pass within metres of the rails).
19:30
Coach back to Melbourne CBD
Arrive Southbank ~21:45. Late dinner: Crown food precinct (Silk Road noodles, Spice Temple bar menu) open till 23:00+.
Friday is full — but now well-paced
Queen Vic Market opens 06:00 (trades 06:00–15:00 Fri). Puffing Billy 14:15 Belgrave departure arrives back ~17:15 — leaves time for a shower and a relaxed dinner within walking distance of Southbank. No reservation pressure, no formal dress, no bill anxiety. This is the right energy for the last full night.
08:00
QV Market — arrive early
Tram from Southbank stop: 2 min walk to Flinders St, then any northbound tram on Elizabeth St (Route 19, 57, 58, 59) — free within the CBD Free Tram Zone. 10 min ride. Or walk 20 min (1.6 km).
08:30
Fresh market sweep
Shopping priorities: Ugg boots/slippers at Millers Uggs (Aussie-made since 1985, AUD 90–260), honey at The Land of Soy & Honey (Dairy Produce Hall Shop 10-11), chocolate at Monsieur Truffe, native spices (wattleseed, lemon myrtle, pink salt) at Dairy Produce Hall bush-tucker vendors, merino scarves at Clothing Sheds J/K. Carry AUD 200 cash for smaller stalls. Light bargaining only acceptable on bulk or high-ticket.
11:00
Market brunch
QV Food Hall (Munro Building): The Bund Co Shanghai dumplings, Saltwater Sushi & Oyster Bar, borek from The Borek Shop (AUD 6 iconic spicy lamb). Budget AUD 12–25/pax.
12:00
Return to Southbank · tram to Flinders St
Drop purchases at apartment. Quick rest, grab light jacket + warm layers for Dandenongs.
13:00
Train to Belgrave · Flinders St Station
Belgrave Line, every 20 min. ~70 min journey. Buy Myki card at 7-Eleven or machines at Flinders St, top up AUD 20/pax. Board 13:05 or 13:25 train to arrive Belgrave ~14:15 — station is adjacent to Puffing Billy boarding.
14:15
Puffing Billy · Belgrave → Lakeside
Historic steam railway since 1900. Open-side carriages through Dandenong Ranges forest, over iconic Monbulk Creek trestle bridge. 1h ride each way + ~1h at Lakeside. In winter, mist + steam = uniquely atmospheric. Dress warm — open carriages mean wind chill. Pre-book at puffingbilly.com.au: Adult return AUD 64, four people AUD 256.
15:10
Lakeside Visitor Centre
Emerald Lake Park. Railway Café for tea and cake. Short loop walk around the lake if energy permits.
16:15
Return train · Lakeside → Belgrave
Depart Lakeside 16:15, arrive Belgrave 17:10 (verify exact time at booking — published timetable has 4:15pm Lakeside→Belgrave or 4:40pm alt).
17:15
Metro train Belgrave → Flinders St
~70 min. Arrive CBD ~18:30. Straight to Southbank apartment for quick shower and change.
19:00
Farewell dinner · Southbank or Crown
No reservation needed — keep it easy after a long day. Best options all within 10 min walk: Spice Temple bar menu at Crown (modern Chinese, open late, no booking needed, AUD 50–80/pax), Nobu Melbourne at Crown (Japanese-Peruvian, AUD 80–120/pax), or Baveras Osteria at Southgate (Italian, Yarra views, AUD 50–70/pax). Alternatively, pick up takeaway from Crown Food Court and eat at the apartment — Phillip Island was a long day yesterday, Puffing Billy is cold open-carriage today. There is no shame in pyjamas and dumplings on the last night.

Slow breakfast · pack
Coffee at a Southbank café. Final pack. Check out target 10:00 — leave luggage with concierge or in room until Uber.
10:00

7h 50m flight. Arrive Changi T3 00:15 Sun 16 Aug. Home.
Car rental
You need the Kia Carnival for exactly 4 days: Monday morning pickup at MEL Airport, Wednesday evening return in CBD. Car stays out of Melbourne CBD driving entirely — which avoids hook turns, tram priority, and parking costs.
Recommendation
4-day rental · pick up at airport Mon AM, return CBD Wed evening
Total approx AUD 650–780 all-in for a Kia Carnival. Saves ~AUD 335 versus keeping the car through Saturday (unused parking days + extra rental days). The car sits unused if kept — Phillip Island is a coach tour, Friday is CBD + Puffing Billy by train, Saturday is an Uber to the airport regardless. Zero loss of itinerary value by returning Wednesday.
Why 4 days, not 6
Option A · Short rental ✓
Return Wed 12 Aug evening
AUD 650
4-day Europcar Kia Carnival + CDW
Add: UberXL to MEL Sat ~AUD 95. All-in: AUD 745.
Car from MEL Airport Mon 09:00 → Europcar 89 Franklin St Wed evening. No Southbank parking. Phillip Island Thursday is coach-included. Friday QV Market + Puffing Billy use trams + trains. Saturday Uber to airport.
Option B · Long rental
Return Sat 15 Aug morning
AUD 985
6-day rental + 3 nights Southbank parking
6-day rental: ~AUD 890. Southbank parking 3 nights: AUD 90–150. Still need UberXL to MEL: AUD 95.
Extra cost: ~AUD 335. Car sits unused from Wed evening to Sat morning. No itinerary benefit.
The delta: ~AUD 335 saved by returning Wednesday
This is the single biggest avoidable cost in the trip structure. Every CBD rental depot has an after-hours key drop if you arrive after closing (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Budget all permit it — Avis and Thrifty do not). Target Europcar 89 Franklin St — closes 17:00 weekdays, has after-hours drop if needed.
Vehicle — Kia Carnival (aligned with family preference)
Kia Carnival 8-seater people mover — confirmed pick
8 seats (only 4 needed, fold-down 3rd row maximises boot), power sliding doors (easy Dad access), cruise control, reversing camera, 4.2m turning radius (CBD-friendly).
Pricing baseline April 2026 (verify closer to trip):
• Base 4-day rate: AUD 110–180/day
• Total base: AUD 440–720
• CDW (reduced excess): AUD 25–45/day
• CityLink e-tag admin: ~AUD 3.30/day on days used
• All-in 4 days: AUD 650–780
Cheaper alternatives if budget pressure:
• Toyota Kluger 7-seat SUV: save ~AUD 50–80. Smaller boot but better fuel economy.
• Hyundai Staria: similar price to Carnival, arguably more comfortable ride for Dad (better seats). Same vehicle class.
No snow tyres needed — GOR is sea-level, 7–13°C in August, no frost on coastal roads.
Booking — where to book
Recommended: aggregator for price, then book direct if matched
Compare
discovercars.com and
vroomvroomvroom.com.au — aggregator rates typically undercut direct by 10–25% on same Europcar/Avis counter. Book the base aggregator rate, then buy third-party excess reduction from
RentalCover at ~AUD 12–15/day — often cheaper than agency's own CDW upgrade.
Booking priorities:
• Pick up MEL Airport T2 · return CBD (Europcar 89 Franklin St)
• Confirm one-way drop-off fee (usually AUD 0–30 for same-city return)
• Named drivers: Shi Hao + Shi Xiong only (Dad adds AUD 11–15/day for no benefit)
• Singapore licence accepted — no IDP required in Victoria, but carry as backup ID
Driving notes
Australia is right-hand-drive (driver on right, drive on left) — same as Singapore and Perth. No adjustment needed.
CBD-specific: hook turns at certain intersections (right turn from far-left lane — signposted where applicable). Trams have priority. Never overtake a stopped tram.
GOR-specific: 60–80 km/h on bends. Add 30–40% to Google Maps estimates. Motion sickness tablets for anyone prone. Kangaroos/wallabies peak at dawn/dusk — rental insurance often excludes single-vehicle animal strikes at night.
CityLink tolls: Rental cars auto-enrolled with e-tag. Expected: ~AUD 7 each way CBD↔Airport + admin fee. Total trip toll budget AUD 25–30.
Petrol: Kia Carnival takes 91 ULP unleaded. Fuel budget for 600–700 km (GOR loop + airport): AUD 140–170.
Where we sleep
Three properties across six nights. One night at the airport hotel, two in Apollo Bay, three in Southbank. All require 2 separate bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for four adults — non-negotiable.
Night 1 · Sun 9 Aug · Parkroyal Melbourne Airport
Nights 2–3 · Mon 10 & Tue 11 Aug · Apollo Bay
Book Apollo Bay immediately — limited 2BR stock
Apollo Bay 2-bedroom properties are finite and good ones go fast, even in winter low season. Aim for: central Apollo Bay walk-to-town, 2BR 2BA entire house, kitchen, reverse-cycle heating or wood fire, on-site parking. Budget AUD 220–400/night. Total target: AUD 500–700 for 2 nights.
Nights 4–6 · Wed 12 – Sat 15 Aug · Southbank
Go serviced apartment, not Airbnb — for this group specifically
Four adults, separate bedrooms required, 3 nights mid-winter, Dad mobility considerations. Serviced apartments meaningfully outperform Airbnb on risk-adjusted value: guaranteed lift, confirmed parking height clearance, 24h reception, reliable heating, housekeeping. Southbank has a cluster of excellent operators. Airbnb adds 60–70% risk of parking/lift/heating surprises. Save Airbnb for locations where the listing quality is the selling point (Apollo Bay).
The Great Ocean Road
Three days, one base, no repacking. Apollo Bay sits at the midpoint of the GOR — 85 km from the Twelve Apostles west, 45 km from Lorne east. The geometry makes everything a half-day round trip.
Base decision — locked
Apollo Bay wins on every axis
Port Campbell is too far west (Lorne becomes a 3-hour each-way slog), Lorne is too far east (12 Apostles becomes punishing in winter daylight). Apollo Bay puts both flagship regions inside a comfortable half-day radius, has the deepest winter dining, the largest 2-bedroom stock, and the only 24h fuel on the coastal road.
Driving distances from Apollo Bay
Realistic times (Google estimate + 35% GOR winding adjustment):
• Lorne — 50 km · 1h 10m
• Aireys Inlet / Split Point Lighthouse — 85 km · 1h 50m
• Torquay / Bells Beach — 115 km · 2h 20m
• Maits Rest Rainforest — 17 km · 20m
• Cape Otway Lighthouse — 32 km · 40m
• Twelve Apostles — 85 km · 1h 40m
• Loch Ard Gorge — 90 km · 1h 45m
• Port Campbell — 97 km · 1h 50m
• Warrnambool (Logan's Beach whales) — 164 km · 3h 00m (stretch goal only)
Accessibility — key stops
Fully accessible / easy for Dad (70M)
easy Twelve Apostles — boardwalk from car park, zero steps
easy Loch Ard Gorge — flat clifftop boardwalks, 6 viewpoints
easy London Bridge + Arch + Grotto — all accessible boardwalks
easy Split Point Lighthouse — flat walk, 20 min
easy Cape Otway Lighthouse grounds — flat paths; skip the 70-step lighthouse climb
moderate Maits Rest — 800m boardwalk, mostly flat
moderate Erskine Falls upper platform — accessible; skip the 250-step descent
skip Gibson Steps beach — 86 steep stairs
skip Erskine Falls base — 250 descent + return
skip Great Otway NP hill trails — uneven, wet in August
Dining in Apollo Bay
Chris's at Beacon Point · Skenes Creek (20 min north)
Fine-dining Mediterranean / Middle Eastern, ocean-view windows, wood fireplace. Special-occasion dinner choice. Book ahead. AUD 80–120/pax.
La Bimba · 125 Great Ocean Rd, Apollo Bay
Sustainable seafood focus, best wine list in town, modern Australian. Upstairs — may have stairs to entry; confirm when booking.
Apollo Bay Hotel bistro · safe Dad choice
Log fire, classic pub-bistro menu, wheelchair accessible, reliable. Ideal low-energy night after a long driving day.
Apollo Bay Bakery · breakfast institution
Scallop pies are regionally famous. Pick up lunch supplies for GOR driving days.
Winter GOR — weather and driving rules
August is the wettest and windiest month on this coast. Apollo Bay averages 19 rain days, coastal gusts 40–60 km/h routine. Delay morning driving until after 08:30 due to Otways fog. Hard rule: no driving 30 min before sunrise or 60 min after sunset — kangaroo and wallaby strikes peak at twilight, and most rental CDW excludes single-vehicle animal strikes at night. Check VicTraffic app each morning for GOR landslide alerts (Lorne–Skenes Creek is the most vulnerable stretch).
Key activities
Four paid experiences form the backbone of the trip: Phillip Island, Puffing Billy, GoBoat, and the GOR itself. Book in the order below.
Phillip Island · Thu 13 Aug · coach tour
Autopia Tours · recommended operator
Victoria's longest-running small-group tour operator (since 1987). 24-seat coaches with upgraded seats. 10-language audio guide app.
Winter pickup 11:45 at Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders St (12 min walk from Southbank).
Includes: Moonlit Sanctuary + Koala Conservation Reserve + Nobbies + Churchill Island + Penguin Parade.
Pricing: Adult General AUD 158 · Penguins Plus upgrade +AUD 35 · Underground Viewing +AUD 35 extra (heated glass bunker, max 70 people, worth it for Dad's warmth).
Total target for 4 pax with Underground: AUD 860–920.
Book direct —
autopiatours.com.au.
Avoid Klook for this specific tour — documented cases of Penguins Plus/Underground booking sync failures.
Viewing tier decision — Underground recommended
General viewing (included): exposed tiered grandstand, concrete, 4°C windchill for 90 min
Penguins Plus (+AUD 35): raised exposed platform, max 300 people, closer path
Underground (+AUD 35 additional): heated indoor glass-fronted bunker at penguin eye-level, max 70 people — for a 70yo in August wind chill, this is medically sensible, not a luxury
Ultimate Adventure: skip — requires 1.5 km sand walk
Puffing Billy · Fri 14 Aug · afternoon

Australia's oldest and best-preserved heritage steam railway (1900). Open-side carriages, legs dangling, through Dandenong Ranges fern-gullies.

puffingbilly.com.au
Dress warmly — open carriages
Carriages are open-sided with low wooden walls. August afternoon in the Dandenong Ranges runs 8–12°C with wind chill in motion. Thermal base layer, fleece, waterproof shell, beanie, gloves. This matters especially for Dad.

BYO: Wholly the point — pack a proper picnic. Woolworths Metro on Queensbridge St covers everything. Warm jacket essential (open water, August wind).
Price Saturday: ~AUD 200 for 2h (whole boat, not per person). Book 11:00 slot at
goboat.com.au. Free reschedule up to 24h if rain.
Whale watching · optional extension
August is peak whale season — but it's a stretch goal
Logan's Beach, Warrnambool is the southern right whale nursery (June–October peak). Whales 50m from shore from a free viewing platform. From Apollo Bay it's ~3 hours each way, only achievable as a committed Tuesday push (replace part of the Apostles loop with Warrnambool). Decide Monday night based on weather and group energy. Warrnambool Whale Watch Facebook page has daily sighting updates. Not default — treat as bonus.
Melbourne city
Southbank is your base for the final three nights. Queen Vic Market, laneways, shopping, Flower Drum — the city rewards slow wandering. Two days is right for this group.
Getting around Southbank → CBD
Southbank is outside the Free Tram Zone
The Free Tram Zone ends at the Yarra. To use free trams: walk 5 min across Princes Bridge into the CBD, then ride free around Flinders St / Bourke St / Collins St / Spring St / La Trobe St. If you board a tram from Southbank, you need a Myki card (AUD 6 + AUD 15 load = AUD 84 for the group for all 3 days).
Queen Victoria Market · Fri 14 Aug morning
Trading hours Fri · 06:00–15:00
Arrive 08:00–09:00 for best experience — produce traders fully set up, specialty shops open at 09:00, crowds peak after 11:00.
From Southbank: Walk to Flinders St (5 min) → any northbound tram on Elizabeth St (Route 19, 57, 58, 59) → free within CBD Zone → alight at Victoria St. Total 15 min door to door.
What to buy · best stalls
Ugg boots & slippers: Millers Uggs (since 1985, 100% Aussie sheepskin, AUD 90–260), Jumbo Ugg Boots (made in Melbourne, up to 70% off RRP), Maree Nominees. Authenticity: "Made in Australia" label + double-face sheepskin + green/gold kangaroo logo. Avoid Deckers "UGG" US brand (Chinese export).
Honey: The Land of Soy & Honey (Dairy Produce Hall Shop 10-11) for Manuka/Aussie honey. Beechworth Honey flagship at Block Arcade for premium gift-quality (afternoon stop).
Chocolate: Monsieur Truffe (deli hall). Haigh's flagship at Block Arcade later.
Native spices: Dairy Produce Hall bush-tucker vendors — wattleseed, lemon myrtle, Murray River pink salt, mountain pepper.
Merino: Clothing Sheds J/K/L/M. Scarves AUD 40–80, jumpers AUD 80–200.
Lunch: QV Food Hall (Munro Building) — Bund Co Shanghai dumplings, Saltwater Sushi, The Borek Shop (iconic spicy lamb borek AUD 6).
Cash vs card: Most stalls tap-to-pay. Carry AUD 200 cash for smaller vendors + occasional 1.5% surcharges. Markets are fixed-price — light bargaining only on bulk or high-ticket, never aggressive.
Laneways · Block Arcade · shopping
Degraves St + Centre Place
Melbourne's iconic coffee laneways. Dukes Coffee Roasters or Patricia Coffee for flat whites. Clementine's for Australian-made gifts (jams, soaps, ceramics).
Block Arcade + Royal Arcade
1892 Victorian-era arcades. Haigh's Chocolates flagship (dark chocolate raspberry truffles — best gift purchase in Melbourne). Beechworth Honey at Shop 14, 282 Collins St. Koko Black at Royal Arcade.
NGV Design Store · Federation Square
Best design-forward souvenirs in Melbourne. For Yanzhen: quality art print or ceramic far more memorable than generic tourist items.

Plan alignment
Discrepancies between Shi Xiong's earlier Excel itinerary and the current plan, resolved through group discussion. For reference when reviewing with the family.
Resolved discrepancies
1 · Trip duration · 8 days vs 7 days
Original: 8 days ending Sun 16 Aug. Resolved: 7 days. SQ208 departs Sat 15 Aug 18:25 Melbourne, arrives SIN 00:15 Sun 16 Aug. Day 8 is the arrival day in Singapore, not a Melbourne day. Insurance coverage through arrival Sunday.
2 · Car pickup location · airport vs CBD
Resolved: Pick up at MEL Airport Mon morning after Parkroyal overnight. Makes sense — Parkroyal is across the skybridge from the T123 car rental area. No extra Uber to CBD depot needed Monday morning.
3 · GOR base · Port Campbell vs Apollo Bay
Original: Port Campbell overnight. Resolved: Apollo Bay, 2 nights. Midpoint geometry, deepest winter dining, largest 2BR stock. Port Campbell is too far west for the Lorne/Kennett River coast.
4 · Phillip Island day · Wed vs Thu
Original: Wed 12 Aug (same day as GOR return — punishing). Resolved: Thu 13 Aug dedicated coach tour day. Recovery day between GOR and Phillip Island.
5 · Puffing Billy day · Thu vs Fri
Original: Day 5 Thu (after Penguin Parade night, back-to-back exhaustion). Resolved: Fri 14 Aug afternoon — combined with QV Market morning + Flower Drum dinner. Enabled by the revised CBD → GOR → CBD → activities structure, where Puffing Billy only happens post-GOR.
6 · GoBoat day · Sat morning conflict
Original: Sat 15 Aug morning "brunch picnic" (conflict with 18:25 flight — tight). Resolved: Sat morning GoBoat 11:00 slot, 2h finish at 13:00, UberXL to MEL at 14:30. Feasible but tight — verify boat return punctuality and have contingency.
7 · QV Market day · aligned
No discrepancy. Both plans have QV Market on Fri 14 Aug.
8 · Day 3 "shortcut" GOR → Phillip Island via Searoad Ferry
Original: Drive back from Port Campbell to Queenscliff → Searoad Ferry to Sorrento → drive to Phillip Island. Resolved: removed. Ferry approach totals ~4h 30m vs direct 3h 30m via inland highway, costs AUD 96–112 extra, introduces hard booking constraint. Phillip Island is now a coach tour from CBD — ferry not needed.
9 · Packing list · IDP not needed
Original: "International driving permit." Resolved: IDP not required. Singapore licence is issued in English and is directly accepted by VicRoads. Carry the physical card + passport. IDP can be cheap backup ID but not necessary.
10 · Expense sheet · to complete as bookings confirm
Current: Only flights (SGD 4,438.80) and insurance (SGD 110.24) filled. To add as booked: Car rental · Parkroyal · Apollo Bay · Southbank · Phillip Island tour · Puffing Billy · GoBoat · Flower Drum reservation. Update the "to pay sh" / "to pay sx" split after each booking.
Final resolved structure
Day 1 Sun 9 Aug: Flight + Parkroyal Airport
Day 2 Mon 10 Aug: Pick up Kia Carnival at airport → GOR east segment → Apollo Bay
Day 3 Tue 11 Aug: Explore GOR Apostles day from Apollo Bay
Day 4 Wed 12 Aug: Apollo Bay → Melbourne Southbank · return car in CBD evening
Day 5 Thu 13 Aug: Phillip Island coach tour
Day 6 Fri 14 Aug: QV Market · Puffing Billy · Flower Drum
Day 7 Sat 15 Aug: GoBoat brunch picnic · Uber to airport · SQ208 home
