An overview of the week
Seven days, four adults, one trip designed for comfort. Structure locked: airport hotel night one, pick up the Hertz Camry Hybrid at the airport Monday morning, drive to Apollo Bay for two nights on the Great Ocean Road, return to Dorsett Melbourne in the CBD Wednesday evening, then use the final three days for Phillip Island, Puffing Billy, Queen Vic Market, GoBoat, Chinatown shopping, and a farewell dinner steps from the hotel.

The trip in one sentence
Airport hotel Sunday → drive the Great Ocean Road Monday–Wednesday from an Apollo Bay base → settle into Dorsett Melbourne (CBD/Chinatown) Wednesday night → Phillip Island Thursday → Queen Vic Market + Puffing Billy + farewell dinner Friday → GoBoat + fly home Saturday.
Why this structure works
Three GOR days from a single Apollo Bay base — no repacking, no rushed driving, room for an Otways rainforest morning and a proper Twelve Apostles sunset. Puffing Billy deferred to Friday post-GOR — you'll actually enjoy the steam train when you're not still road-weary. Car returned Wed evening at Hertz Downtown (Franklin St — two blocks from Dorsett, ~5-min walk back). Dorsett base sits inside the Free Tram Zone with Chinatown literally next door — most evenings end on foot. Farewell dinner now Chinatown, not Crown — the geometry rewards it.

Car rental
Hertz Toyota Camry Hybrid, booked. 3-day rental, Monday morning pickup at MEL Airport, Wednesday afternoon return in CBD. Car stays out of Melbourne CBD parking entirely — which avoids hook turns, tram priority, and parking costs.
Booked · L57413872D0
Hertz · Toyota Camry Hybrid (or similar) · pay AUD 253.67 at counter
Pickup Mon 10 Aug 08:30 at Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine, Arrival Drive). Return Wed 12 Aug 17:00 at Melbourne Downtown · Shop 3/8 Franklin St (one-way, no drop-off fee). Pay-at-counter on the Amex ····1005 used to book. Maximum Damage Waiver included, unlimited kilometres, group D2 (Fullsize Hybrid).
⚠ Capacity reality check — Camry is a 5-seater sedan, not a Carnival
The booking is a Toyota Camry Hybrid (or similar D2-class). Four adults plus full luggage for a 7-day GOR + Melbourne trip will fit, but the boot is tight — expect to pile soft bags on laps or fold one rear seat. If this is a problem, options before pickup: (a) call Hertz to upgrade to a fullsize SUV / people mover (typically AUD 30–60/day extra), or (b) split luggage and have someone shop minimal in Melbourne. Decide before 10 Aug — at-counter upgrades are subject to availability and priced higher.

• Payment: Pay Later — present same Amex ····1005 + valid licence at counter. Credit Card Surcharge 1.35% will apply at counter (not in the AUD 253.67 quoted)
• Hertz Downtown weekday hours: 07:30–17:00 — return time is at closing, target arrival 16:30 max
What this changed vs the original plan
Why no longer Kia Carnival via Europcar
Earlier draft assumed an 8-seat Kia Carnival via Europcar 89 Franklin St, AUD 650–780. The actual booking is a Camry-class hybrid with Hertz Downtown (Shop 3/8 Franklin St) — substantially cheaper after the AUD 250.42 promo, but a 5-seater sedan rather than a people mover. The 3-day billing (vs 4-day plan) reflects the Mon 08:30 → Wed 17:00 pickup/return window rounded by Hertz's day-counting.
Driving notes
Australia is right-hand-drive (driver on right, drive on left) — same as Singapore. No adjustment needed.
Named drivers: Confirm at counter that Shi Hao + Shi Xiong are both on the rental agreement (additional driver fee ~AUD 11–15/day). Singapore licence is in English and accepted by VicRoads — IDP not required but carry as backup ID.
CBD-specific: hook turns at certain intersections (right turn from far-left lane — signposted where applicable). Trams have priority. Never overtake a stopped tram.
GOR-specific: 60–80 km/h on bends. Add 30–40% to Google Maps estimates. Motion sickness tablets for anyone prone. Kangaroos/wallabies peak at dawn/dusk — rental CDW often excludes single-vehicle animal strikes at night.
CityLink tolls: Rental cars auto-enrolled with e-tag. Expected: ~AUD 7 each way CBD↔Airport + admin fee. Total trip toll budget AUD 25–30.
Petrol: Camry Hybrid takes 91 ULP unleaded; hybrid drivetrain means 4.7–5.5L/100km real-world. Fuel budget for 600–700 km (GOR loop + airport): AUD 95–120.
Refuel before return: Coles Express on Peel St or 7-Eleven Elizabeth St (within 10 km of Hertz Downtown — standard fuel-return rule).
Where we sleep
Three properties across six nights, all booked. One night at the airport hotel, two in Apollo Bay (Toby's foreshore townhouse), three at Dorsett Melbourne in the CBD/Chinatown precinct. Every property meets the brief: 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, four adults, no shared beds.
Night 1 · Sun 9 Aug · Novotel Melbourne Airport
Nights 2–3 · Mon 10 & Tue 11 Aug · Apollo Bay
Pre-arrival to-do · Toby's townhouse
3 days before arrival: message Toby on Airbnb to confirm parking instructions (driveway/street/permit), key access method (lockbox / meet on arrival), heating (gas/electric, ducted vs reverse-cycle), and whether linen is provided. Save Toby's mobile + a backup contact in your phone before driving — patchy 4G between Lorne and Apollo Bay.
Nights 4–6 · Wed 12 – Sat 15 Aug · Dorsett Melbourne
Why Dorsett works better than the original Southbank brief
Inside the Free Tram Zone — every CBD tram is free both ways, no Myki needed for in-CBD movement (Southbank sat outside, requiring Myki). Chinatown is a 2-min walk — farewell dinner geometry transformed: HuTong, Flower Drum, Supper Inn, Tim Ho Wan all within 5 min. Hertz Downtown depot is two blocks north on Franklin St — Wed evening car return is now a 5-min walk back instead of a 10-min Uber from Southbank. Trade-off: GoBoat at Banana Alley is now ~12 min walk (was 5 min from Southbank), and you lose the Yarra-promenade evening stroll. Net: trade favours Dorsett comfortably given the trip's evening shape.
The Great Ocean Road
Three days, one base, no repacking. Apollo Bay sits at the midpoint of the GOR — 85 km from the Twelve Apostles west, 45 km from Lorne east. The geometry makes everything a half-day round trip.
Base decision — locked
Apollo Bay wins on every axis
Port Campbell is too far west (Lorne becomes a 3-hour each-way slog), Lorne is too far east (12 Apostles becomes punishing in winter daylight). Apollo Bay puts both flagship regions inside a comfortable half-day radius, has the deepest winter dining, the largest 2-bedroom stock, and the only 24h fuel on the coastal road.
Driving distances from Apollo Bay
Realistic times (Google estimate + 35% GOR winding adjustment):
• Lorne — 50 km · 1h 10m
• Aireys Inlet / Split Point Lighthouse — 85 km · 1h 50m
• Torquay / Bells Beach — 115 km · 2h 20m
• Maits Rest Rainforest — 17 km · 20m
• Cape Otway Lighthouse — 32 km · 40m
• Twelve Apostles — 85 km · 1h 40m
• Loch Ard Gorge — 90 km · 1h 45m
• Port Campbell — 97 km · 1h 50m
• Warrnambool (Logan's Beach whales) — 164 km · 3h 00m (stretch goal only)
Accessibility — key stops
Fully accessible / easy for Dad (70M)
easy Twelve Apostles — boardwalk from car park, zero steps
easy Loch Ard Gorge — flat clifftop boardwalks, 6 viewpoints
easy London Bridge + Arch + Grotto — all accessible boardwalks
easy Split Point Lighthouse — flat walk, 20 min
easy Cape Otway Lighthouse grounds — flat paths; skip the 70-step lighthouse climb
moderate Maits Rest — 800m boardwalk, mostly flat
moderate Erskine Falls upper platform — accessible; skip the 250-step descent
skip Gibson Steps beach — 86 steep stairs
skip Erskine Falls base — 250 descent + return
skip Great Otway NP hill trails — uneven, wet in August
Dining in Apollo Bay
Chris's at Beacon Point · Skenes Creek (20 min north)
Fine-dining Mediterranean / Middle Eastern, ocean-view windows, wood fireplace. Special-occasion dinner choice. Book ahead. AUD 80–120/pax.
La Bimba · 125 Great Ocean Rd, Apollo Bay
Sustainable seafood focus, best wine list in town, modern Australian. Upstairs — may have stairs to entry; confirm when booking.
Apollo Bay Hotel bistro · safe Dad choice
Log fire, classic pub-bistro menu, wheelchair accessible, reliable. Ideal low-energy night after a long driving day.
Apollo Bay Bakery · breakfast institution
Scallop pies are regionally famous. Pick up lunch supplies for GOR driving days.
Winter GOR — weather and driving rules
August is the wettest and windiest month on this coast. Apollo Bay averages 19 rain days, coastal gusts 40–60 km/h routine. Delay morning driving until after 08:30 due to Otways fog. Hard rule: no driving 30 min before sunrise or 60 min after sunset — kangaroo and wallaby strikes peak at twilight, and most rental CDW excludes single-vehicle animal strikes at night. Check VicTraffic app each morning for GOR landslide alerts (Lorne–Skenes Creek is the most vulnerable stretch).
Key activities
Four paid experiences form the backbone of the trip: Phillip Island, Puffing Billy, GoBoat, and the GOR itself. Book in the order below.
Phillip Island · Thu 13 Aug · coach tour
Autopia Tours · recommended operator
Victoria's longest-running small-group tour operator (since 1987). 24-seat coaches with upgraded seats. 10-language audio guide app.
Winter pickup 11:45 at Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders St (~10 min walk south from Dorsett via Elizabeth St).
Includes: Moonlit Sanctuary + Koala Conservation Reserve + Nobbies + Churchill Island + Penguin Parade.
Pricing: Adult General AUD 158 · Penguins Plus upgrade +AUD 35 · Underground Viewing +AUD 35 extra (heated glass bunker, max 70 people, worth it for Dad's warmth).
Total target for 4 pax with Underground: AUD 860–920.
Book direct —
autopiatours.com.au.
Avoid Klook for this specific tour — documented cases of Penguins Plus/Underground booking sync failures.
Viewing tier decision — Underground recommended
General viewing (included): exposed tiered grandstand, concrete, 4°C windchill for 90 min
Penguins Plus (+AUD 35): raised exposed platform, max 300 people, closer path
Underground (+AUD 35 additional): heated indoor glass-fronted bunker at penguin eye-level, max 70 people — for a 70yo in August wind chill, this is medically sensible, not a luxury
Ultimate Adventure: skip — requires 1.5 km sand walk
Puffing Billy · Fri 14 Aug · afternoon
Belgrave → Lakeside return · 2h 20m
Australia's oldest and best-preserved heritage steam railway (1900). Open-side carriages, legs dangling, through Dandenong Ranges fern-gullies.
Winter weekday timetable: Belgrave departures 10:00, 11:00, 12:30, 14:15.
14:15 departure is the fit for our day — gives QV Market morning + time back for a relaxed dinner.
Travel to Belgrave: Metro train from Flinders St, Belgrave Line, ~70 min. Station is adjacent to Puffing Billy boarding. Myki card needed (AUD 20 load).
Fares: Adult return AUD 64 · Concession (65+) AUD 48.
4 pax total ~AUD 240.
Book online mandatory — no walk-up tickets.
puffingbilly.com.au
Dress warmly — open carriages
Carriages are open-sided with low wooden walls. August afternoon in the Dandenong Ranges runs 8–12°C with wind chill in motion. Thermal base layer, fleece, waterproof shell, beanie, gloves. This matters especially for Dad.
GoBoat · Sat 15 Aug · morning
Yarra River picnic boat · 2h rental
10hp electric boat, seats up to 8, central picnic table. Self-piloted.
No licence required. Top speed 8 km/h — safer than a bicycle.
Location: Banana Alley Vaults, Berths 2 & 3, on the north bank of the Yarra under the King St bridges. ~12 min walk from Dorsett (south on Elizabeth, across Princes Bridge, west along Flinders Walk).
Routes: Upstream past Melbourne Park, Botanic Gardens, boathouses. Downstream past Crown, Docklands, Marvel Stadium.
BYO: Wholly the point — pack a proper picnic. Coles Central at Elizabeth/Flinders Lane is on the walking route — pick up cheese, charcuterie, bread, fruit, pastries, drinks. Warm jacket essential (open water, August wind).
Price Saturday: ~AUD 200 for 2h (whole boat, not per person). Book 11:00 slot at
goboat.com.au. Free reschedule up to 24h if rain.
Whale watching · optional extension
August is peak whale season — but it's a stretch goal
Logan's Beach, Warrnambool is the southern right whale nursery (June–October peak). Whales 50m from shore from a free viewing platform. From Apollo Bay it's ~3 hours each way, only achievable as a committed Tuesday push (replace part of the Apostles loop with Warrnambool). Decide Monday night based on weather and group energy. Warrnambool Whale Watch Facebook page has daily sighting updates. Not default — treat as bonus.
Melbourne city
Dorsett Melbourne is your base for the final three nights — east-CBD, Chinatown precinct, inside the Free Tram Zone. Most of the city's heavy hitters are within a 15-min walk. Two days is right for this group.

All trams are free within this zone, including hop-on/hop-off along Bourke St, Collins St, Elizabeth St, Swanston St, La Trobe St, Spring St. No Myki tap-on needed inside the zone. You only need Myki for: the Belgrave Line train to Puffing Billy (Fri), and any tram trip that crosses the FTZ boundary (e.g. up Lygon St past Victoria St, or south of the Yarra). One AUD 20 Myki per person covers Belgrave return + buffer.

Melbourne's iconic coffee laneways. Dukes Coffee Roasters or Patricia Coffee for flat whites. Clementine's for Australian-made gifts (jams, soaps, ceramics).

Dining steps from Dorsett
Chinatown · 2–5 min walk
Flower Drum (17 Market Lane) — the Melbourne fine-dining institution, Cantonese, AUD 120–180/pax, book ahead. Now logistically trivial from Dorsett — worth re-opening as the farewell dinner option.
HuTong Dumpling Bar (14–16 Market Lane) — xiao long bao + Sichuan, queues form early.
Supper Inn (15 Celestial Ave, upstairs) — late-night Cantonese, open till 02:30, locals' favourite.
Shanghai Street Dumpling (146 Little Bourke) — fast, cheap, generous, kid-friendly.
Tim Ho Wan (206 Bourke St) — dim sum chain, BBQ pork bun is the order.
Modern restaurants · 5–10 min walk
Lee Ho Fook (Duckboard Place) — modern Chinese, two-hat alumni, AUD 70–100/pax · Chin Chin (Flinders Lane) — modern Asian, no reservations, AUD 50–80 · Tipo 00 (Little Bourke) — handmade pasta, AUD 60–90 · Cumulus Inc. (Flinders Lane) — Melbourne classic, all-day, AUD 60–90 · Higher Ground (650 Little Bourke) — converted power station, brunch-to-dinner, AUD 25–60.

Where the budget can still flex
Accommodation is now locked, so the variable line items are: General viewing instead of Underground at Phillip Island (save AUD 140 group) · cook-in one GOR dinner from the townhouse kitchen (save AUD 100–150) · Chinatown dumpling-and-takeaway farewell instead of Flower Drum (save AUD 200–400). Update the Dorsett line with the actual booked rate when known — it materially moves the per-pax SGD figure.
Plan alignment
Discrepancies between Shi Xiong's earlier Excel itinerary and the current plan, resolved through group discussion. For reference when reviewing with the family.
Resolved discrepancies
1 · Trip duration · 8 days vs 7 days
Original: 8 days ending Sun 16 Aug. Resolved: 7 days. SQ208 departs Sat 15 Aug 18:25 Melbourne, arrives SIN 00:15 Sun 16 Aug. Day 8 is the arrival day in Singapore, not a Melbourne day. Insurance coverage through arrival Sunday.
2 · Car pickup location · airport vs CBD
Resolved: Pick up at MEL Airport Mon 08:30 after Novotel overnight. Hertz depot is on the ground floor of the T123 car park opposite Terminal 2 — short walk or quick taxi from Novotel. No extra trip to a CBD depot needed.
3 · GOR base · Port Campbell vs Apollo Bay
Original: Port Campbell overnight. Resolved: Apollo Bay, 2 nights. Midpoint geometry, deepest winter dining, largest 2BR stock. Port Campbell is too far west for the Lorne/Kennett River coast.
4 · Phillip Island day · Wed vs Thu
Original: Wed 12 Aug (same day as GOR return — punishing). Resolved: Thu 13 Aug dedicated coach tour day. Recovery day between GOR and Phillip Island.
5 · Puffing Billy day · Thu vs Fri
Original: Day 5 Thu (after Penguin Parade night, back-to-back exhaustion). Resolved: Fri 14 Aug afternoon — combined with QV Market morning + Flower Drum dinner. Enabled by the revised CBD → GOR → CBD → activities structure, where Puffing Billy only happens post-GOR.
6 · GoBoat day · Sat morning conflict
Original: Sat 15 Aug morning "brunch picnic" (conflict with 18:25 flight — tight). Resolved: Sat morning GoBoat 11:00 slot, 2h finish at 13:00, UberXL to MEL at 14:30. Feasible but tight — verify boat return punctuality and have contingency.
7 · QV Market day · aligned
No discrepancy. Both plans have QV Market on Fri 14 Aug.
8 · Day 3 "shortcut" GOR → Phillip Island via Searoad Ferry
Original: Drive back from Port Campbell to Queenscliff → Searoad Ferry to Sorrento → drive to Phillip Island. Resolved: removed. Ferry approach totals ~4h 30m vs direct 3h 30m via inland highway, costs AUD 96–112 extra, introduces hard booking constraint. Phillip Island is now a coach tour from CBD — ferry not needed.
9 · Packing list · IDP not needed
Original: "International driving permit." Resolved: IDP not required. Singapore licence is issued in English and is directly accepted by VicRoads. Carry the physical card + passport. IDP can be cheap backup ID but not necessary.
10 · Apollo Bay accommodation · resolved (booked Toby's townhouse)
Resolved: Townhouse on the foreshore at 183 Great Ocean Rd 8, Apollo Bay, hosted by Toby on Airbnb. 10–12 Aug. Replaces the earlier Dolphin Apartments / Apollo Bay Cottages comparison. Townhouse format means stairs — Dad gets the ground-floor bedroom.
11 · Melbourne base · Southbank → Dorsett CBD
Original (v4): Southbank serviced apartment (Quay West / Oaks / Quest comparison). Resolved: Dorsett Melbourne, CBD/Chinatown precinct, 12–15 Aug. Inside the Free Tram Zone — meaningful upgrade vs Southbank which sits outside the FTZ. Trade-off: GoBoat is now ~12-min walk (was 5), but Hertz Downtown is now 5-min walk (was 10-min Uber), and Chinatown dining is 2-min walk. Net positive for this group.
12 · Farewell dinner · Crown/Southbank → Chinatown
Original (v4): Spice Temple / Nobu / Baveras at Crown. Resolved: Chinatown options (HuTong, Lee Ho Fook, Tipo 00) primary, Flower Drum re-opened as a fine-dining option since logistics no longer punish it. Dinner is now a 2–5 min walk from the room, not 15 min across the river.
13 · Expense sheet · accommodation now locked
Confirmed: Flights (SGD 4,438.80 · Shi Hao), insurance (SGD 110.24 · Shi Xiong), Novotel Night 1 (SGD 336 · Shi Xiong), Apollo Bay townhouse, Dorsett Melbourne, Hertz Camry Hybrid (AUD 253.67 · pay at counter, conf L57413872D0). Still to add as booked: Phillip Island tour · Puffing Billy · GoBoat. Update Apollo Bay + Dorsett actual paid amounts and the "to pay sh / to pay sx" split once invoices are in.
Final resolved structure
